AV and electrical equipment needs to be periodically checked
Keeping electrical appliances safe to use
PAT testing, according to the HSE website is “Portable appliance testing (PAT) is the term used to describe the examination of electrical appliances and equipment to ensure they are safe to use.”
HSE advise that “The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require that any electrical equipment that has the potential to cause injury is maintained in a safe condition.”
The Regulations, they point out, don’t actually specify what needs to be done – or how frequently – such as, for example, every twelve months.
The importance of checking mechanical safety
Checking the integrity of, for example, overhead brackets and fastenings for speakers and lights is a task that should be carried out periodically. Items that are usually fixed in hard to reach places – such as from ceilings – must have fixings assessed from time to time.
And it makes sense that electrical safety considerations are addressed at the same time.
Other benefits of assessment
During a routine check, equipment that isn’t working properly, or elements that have ceased to function can also be checked – and often re-enabled.
Time for a revamp?
A new sound, audio visual lighting system can offer a number of important reasons for upgrading.
Many new systems can offer greater flexibility, ease of use and can dramatically reduce electricity bills. A new Stagg stage lighting system recently installed at Eyres Monsell Primary School in Leicester was deemed to be a huge success.
“The new system provided the school with a far greater range of capabilities than they had ever managed to attain before – and yet the new system was far easier to use. And being far more frugal with electricity usage, it has helped them cut their electricity bills.”
Enquire about an equipment checkup
